How to Choose a Wedding DJ in London (7 Questions to Ask)

Your wedding music is one of the few things guests remember years later — and one of the easiest things to get wrong. Here are the seven questions we'd tell our own family to ask before booking any DJ (including us).

The 7 questions

  1. "Are you insured?" A professional carries public liability insurance (many venues require £5m) and equipment cover. No insurance, no booking — some venues will literally turn an uninsured DJ away on the day.
  2. "Do you use a contract?" A proper booking contract protects you: date, times, fee, deposit, and what happens if anything changes. A DJ working on a handshake is a risk you don't need on your wedding day.
  3. "How do you handle our music?" The right answer involves a planning call, a request list, and — crucially — a do-not-play list. Your day, your soundtrack.
  4. "Can you read a mixed crowd?" Weddings bring every generation and culture into one room. Ask what genres they're comfortable moving between. (Our answer: Amapiano to House to Dancehall to Gospel classics — and back — in one set.)
  5. "What's included in the price?" Hours, sound system, lighting, microphone for speeches, setup time. Compare packages, not just numbers.
  6. "What happens if you're ill?" Professionals have a backup plan and a network of trusted DJs. Ask.
  7. "When are you setting up?" You don't want a DJ wheeling speakers through your drinks reception. Early setup should be an option.

What it costs

In London, professional wedding DJs typically range from £500 to £2,500+ depending on hours, production and experience. Below that range, ask yourself what's being cut — usually it's insurance, preparation or equipment quality.
